Sándor Galimberti and his wife, Valéria Dénes were seminal figures of 20th-century modern Hungarian art. However, this extensive exhibition selects from the works not only of the couple, but also of the husband’s father, Luigi Galimberti, and of his first wife, Mária Lanov.
The works of Sándor Galimberti (1883–1915) and Valéria Dénes (1877–1915) were dispersed after their death, with many of them now lost, only some forty paintings surviving. Kaposvár, Galimberti’s hometown held a retrospective exhibition in 2002, but the two decades since then have seen a considerable growth in the number of known works, all of which will now be presented.
The styles practised by the Galimbertis ranged from plein-air naturalism through Art Nouveau and Fauvism to Cubism – even futurism, in a sense – and they ranged over a similarly extensive geographical area in Europe, from Kaposvár through Nagybánya and Paris to Belgium, and finally Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The exhibition will also show the places where the artist couple lived.
